Chris Paul to Orlando is still a definite possibility, but a more realistic timetable for Magic fans to get ready for a CP3 and Dwight Howard combo would be towards February’s NBA trade deadline in 2011. So with Chris Paul nearly out of the equation for the Orlando Magic to start this NBA season, what’s still out there for the Magic? The answer is, not much. But what would I like to see the Orlando Magic do before the start of the 2010-2011 NBA season? I would love nothing better than for the Magic to bring back 2 players who made the Orlando Magic what they are today. I’m talking about bringing back both Tracy McGrady and Shaquille O’Neal. McGrady had his best NBA years as a member of the Orlando Magic, and as a Central Florida native, I had more fun going to Magic games when T-Mac ran things than I do now watching Dwight and Co. It was something about going to watch a player, knowing that on any given night scoring 50 points or more was never out of the realm of possibility. If T-Mac never ran into his injury problems, he might have been one of the top 6, possibly even 5 players of all time. At one point when McGrady was with Orlando, you couldn’t have the, “who’s the best player in the NBA right now” debate without putting Tracy McGrady in there, he (McGrady) was on par with Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, and the rest. Plus T-Mac’s cousin is CURRENTLY a member of the Orlando Magic, SG Vince Carter. And what better send off would it be for Shaquille O’Neal, THE REAL SUPERMAN, than to come back to Orlando, where it all started, and have 1, possibly 2 more good runs at a NBA Championship? Having Shaq in Orlando would be great for Dwight Howard. I like the fact the Magic have Patrick Ewing on the coaching staff, trying to teach Dwight some offense. The only problem with that is, Dwight isn’t the type of player Ewing was, Dwight is more like Shaq, and what better way to teach Dwight how to use his size than to have the most dominant player of all time practice with SUPERBOY on a regular basis? These moves make sense to me, not only would the Orlando Magic’s bench, one of the deepest in the NBA, add more depth to it, but with Shaq on your roster, if you trade back up C Marcin Gortat in any deal this year, you would still have a great back up C in Shaq. Tracy McGrady off the bench would be amazing also. But why it makes more sense to me to bring both of these former Magic All-Stars back to O-Town is the opening of the new arena, the Amway Center. Shaq, McGrady, and all the players currently on the Magic’s roster share one common bond, they all called Amway Arena home (I remember it better as the Orlando O-Rena, or the TD Waterhouse Center). There isn’t a better way to christen the new digs than to have 2 former cornerstones in your franchises history come back for the opening for their new house.

The general Magic fan does not want to see either of these players back. Both players left Magic fans with bad tastes in their mouths. Shaq left the Magic high and dry and only was debating a return to Orlando to bump the bidding war higher and higher in price, his mind was always from day 1 to flee to L.A. Tracy , although a great offensive player with the team, was almost showed out of Orlando with a “your really selfish and play no defense, dont let the door hit you when you leave” type attitude. Of coarse both players were great with the Magic, yearsssssss ago, and would have no where near the same impact now. Neither player wants to accept a role off of the bench, so this will not happen. The only thing that the Magic could benefit from in either scenario would be IF Shaq came off the bench and took on a leadership role with Dwight, as you mentioned, which would NEVER happen. Shaq has never been a teacher and already has had beef with Dwight for no reason. So I see this post as being more of a dream , in a perfect world , type of thing. This will never happen nor do I think it should, for obvious basketball reasons. Tracy is a volume scorer like Vince, and we all saw how well that worked, and Shaq is still looking to finish his own glory and would not accept a hugely reduced role, especially behind the second Superman, which he makes perfectly clear, he was the first.
I agree this is a long shot, but if both McGrady and Shaq want to play in the NBA next year, they have nothing else to do but to accept a bench role. No NBA team is going to sign these players and expect them to be a starter. McGrady could work his way into the starting line-up with the loss of SF Matt Barnes, and Shaq off the bench would be great for Dwight, and if the Magic eventually do trade for CP3, or anyone, current back up C Marcin Gortat will have to be included in any deal, so having Shaq on the roster would fill the void that would arise if Gortat is traded. This would be a low-risk/high-reward move for Orlando. Both McGrady and Shaq, after testing the free agent market, have realized that they are not only going to have to accept a lesser role with teams, but also less money, which works in the Magic’s favor.
